Is Betting Online Legal in Your State?
Currently, the United States has twelve states where
betting online is legal. Besides the usual suspects of Nevada and Pennsylvania,
several more states have been considering launching a legal online betting
market. Some are a long way from becoming fully online while others have waited
months or even years to launch. Here's a quick overview of each state's
progress so far.
Nevada is the gold standard for in-person betting. The
state has six retail locations that accept bets and a state lottery that runs
online sports betting. However, with a population of just under four million
people, the state's market is small and its offerings are limited.
Maryland launched its first online sports betting market
in 777powernet. The state's operators went off line on Tuesday, but relaunched
Wednesday at 9 a.m. ET. The state's first operator, Caesars, opened a temporary
book at Chase Field, and other sportsbooks were expected to launch later this
year.
Indiana went live with online sports betting in October.
There are 13 sportsbooks operating in Indiana at this point. While it's still
too early to know exactly how much the state is earning, sports betting is
estimated to be taking in over $7 billion in bets.
New Jersey was the third state to legalize sports
betting. The state's first three online sportsbooks are Caesars, FanDuel, and
Sportsbook.com. The law authorizes up to 20 more sportsbooks to launch in the
state.
New York launched online sports betting in 2022.
Currently, nine sportsbooks operate in Kansas and another five are expected to
launch in the coming months. In addition to online sports betting, New Jersey
also allows betting on horse races, in-state colleges, and fantasy sports.
Iowa's sports betting market launched in August. The
state's law allows 41 different mobile apps to operate. Several sportsbooks
will offer deep futures on the NBA draft.
Wyoming's sports betting market opened in September.
Wyoming's market is a small one, but the state has been quick to move forward
with its online gambling market. In fact, the state has been one of the fastest
states to launch a legal sports betting market. Wyoming's website is one of the
best-designed in the country. It's easy to navigate and offers up an in-depth
sports betting guide.
Maryland's online sports betting market launched in
November. It's unclear how many online sportsbooks will be operating in
Maryland by the end of the year, but it's likely that at least five will be in
operation by the start of 2020.
Montana is a small state. The state's population is
sparse, but the state's lottery operator, Intralot, has severely jeopardized
competitive pricing. In addition to online betting, the state's lottery also
runs the only game in town.
New Hampshire's online betting market is small. In 2022,
New Hampshire lawmakers came one vote shy of legalizing sports betting, but the
state could suffer if Massachusetts launches mobile wagering.
Iowa, Nevada, and Pennsylvania each passed a sports
betting law in 2021. These states have been early leaders in the legal US
sports betting market. However, the next three states - Mississippi, New
Jersey, and Virginia - will take longer to launch online markets.
