Blackjack, formerly known as Black Jack, Vingt-Un and Black Jack, is an American variant of the European card game, Blackjack. The names come from the three cards dealt out in the game, Jack, Ace and Queen. For many years it was the most popular card game in Las Vegas, with over one hundred thousand people playing it at any given time. Although Blackjack gained popularity in other American cities, such as San Francisco, Chicago and New York City, the most recent version of the game was introduced in Las Vegas in the early nineteen seventies. Since that time it has been a staple casino game at almost every casino in the country.

 

The traditional version of the black jack card game consists of four individuals, either chairs or dealer, each facing a dealer table with the dealer in the middle. A pre-determined amount is bet and the players are required to hold the rest of their money face down on their table until there are two opponents, at which point the dealer will deal the cards. The first person to win gets to keep his money, while the others must switch places. There are a total of twenty-two cards, but there are only two people playing; therefore, betting only on the ace, king, queen, king or ace will guarantee you success.

 

If you bet and your partner ends up having an ace, you are said to be "at the table" - which means you have successfully made your bet and there are only two left to play. The second player in the game is called the red jack and is dealt almost exactly like the black jack. However, the red jack also has the option of picking up the optional fifth card from the deck, called the "burn card", which allows him to transfer all his money to the burn if he ends up with an Ace and Queen or a King and a Queen. If, on the other hand, the red jack ends up with nothing on his table, he has to pass an optional round of betting to the person who had the best betting strategy, known as the "high rollers".

 

After the pre-determined number of rounds have passed and there are no more optional rounds left, then the last card is laid out, called the "queen". This card will be the last card in the hand and it will determine the outcome of the game.
